2017 FSY Week 022 Reinvention

Hello Friday Friends, 朋友, Kawan, Dost & PengYiu,

Quick Quotable
Quotes are told in a few words that impact to our soul. Quotes are not meant to be read lightly. Quotes can change your life only when you choose to be deliberate when you read & think it deeply about them.

This week Quote is:
Radiate boundless love towards the entire world. ~~ Buddha

Question for Reflection
Are my words and actions aligned behind the same message?

One-Word Practice
Resolutions Don’t Work But One Word Practice Does:
This week, that word is:
‘Reinvention’- Today Reinvention begins. And tomorrow it continues.

Today Sharing:
‘Winners Never Quit, and Quitters Never Win’

Does the above quote sound familiar to you?

The old adage quote means something good. But, when I put my crazy mind into the thinking I realized something different.

That’s one of the reasons why I think maybe smokers didn’t want to quit because nobody likes a quitter, and when they quit they become the odd one among their peers during break time or social gathering. Not specifically related only to smokers, many of us do struggle with bad habits. Resisting is hard and changing it feels impossible!

The most appropriate reason I can think of what really make you more likely to engage in bad habits is Stress.

And to me, I do believe a little bad habit chases away stress. Heck! Wow, I said that.

I did smoke for 30 years (1970 -2000) and learned that we can't get rid of a habit, we can only replace it.
When you feel the urge to light up, put a bottle of wine in front of you. The trigger stays the same and you still get a nice reward but you’re replacing the bad behavior with a good one.

So, in the year 2000, my wife & I went to Brisbane, Australia for a 2 weeks holiday. We stay on a farm for a week and bought a dozen of wines and place it where I can reach easily. Whenever there is a trigger k to light up a cigarette, I replaced the trigger with a glass of wine and eventually, after a couple of days I managed to quit smoking.

I make it all sounds too easy. I know everyone at some point in time wanted to give up or screw up the plan of changing a bad habit. We all do. In fact, I bet you know when you’re most likely to screw up. So here are a few A, B, C & D words that can make sure you stay on the journey to a new behaviour and don’t screw-up…

(A)Awareness
Always beware & gain awareness. Nobody sabotage you, only you sabotage yourself.

(B)Believe
Believe in yourself. No matter what the outer pressure trigger you to stay with your bad habit. Your sense of what you know to be true of yourself is to stay consistent and solid.

(C)Change & Commitment
You can’t change yourself unless you change the trigger. We engage in bad habits because of the triggers and our environment. From my personal smoking experience, the trigger is the urge to smoke and the environment. In the year 2000, I didn’t change myself yet, I change the context (wine) of the triggers and the environment (Brisbane) and make them more difficult (zero cigarettes) to reach and I am less likely to engage in the behavior.
Commitment is a mind game. Your mind is your emotional world. Sticking to your daily routine might not always feel fantastic. Sometimes, your commitment wavers and leaves you feeling restless & impatient. Go back to the baseline of the trigger instead of ignoring what’s going on inside of you.

(D)Discipline, Determination & Do it
Set one achievable goal at a time. One mistake people make is trying to do everything at once, getting overwhelmed, and dropping the whole thing. I have many bad habits when I was younger. With the Discipline, Determination & Do it mindset in the year 2000, I set one goal to quit smoking and to go that distance, breaking my one goal into smaller steps and achieved it before I return back to Singapore.

You don’t need to change yourself just yet. Change the trigger & environment around you.

Try this, if you are spending too much time on your smartphone? Maybe or merely take out the battery and it dramatically decreases the amount of time you will spend using your smartphone.

If you still screw-up, it’s okay just follow these 3 letters – ‘FSY

(F) Forgive yourself
When you lose self-control or procrastinate. Forgive yourself and move on.

(S) Stumble yourself
In trying to change a bad habit to better your life, it’s okay to stumble. It takes time. You learn.

(Y)You sum up yourself

Do thing one at a time.
Don’t Stop.
Don’t Eliminate the bad behavior just yet.
Don’t Change you. Change your trigger & environment
Don’t Stress – chill with an ice cold white wine.
Don’t Eliminate. Replace.
Don’t need to Innovate, just beat the temptation.
Don’t need to BS – (B)Be (S)Smart, just be self-awareness & keep going.
Don’t worry about peer pressure – it is a good pressure after all if you use it strategically. I have repeatedly emphasized on numerous time that when the same 5-6 friends of your congregated around in social gatherings somehow created a norm of your behaviour & habit that indirectly what peer pressure is all about. Do you remember when your mom wanted you to hang out with one of them, the one with the initial FSY because he provided a good example. Mom was right!
