Last week I meet my friend for coffee. He asked me, are you retired or settled down?  And before I answered, he continued, Ya-loh! Your kids are now older, so, now you can afford to retire, and your bank is full.

I told him I am not retiring, neither am I settled. Yes, my kids are now older, but our relationship is not what it once was. Still, I always believe wherever my kids are in any part of the world, our home is where they will return for joy.

I am not retiring; I just want to be lost for a couple of years to find myself.  If you are hiring. let me know.

I shared with him a few things about why I paused the corporate world, and am asking myself, what will happen to me next? Where am I heading? Besides the coffin, where we will all eventually wind up in.

At 55, I almost forgot who I was, but thank Buddha, I was able to take a huge leap of faith and paused my corporate job at 56 years old.

Here are the 5 things I wanted to pause to find myself:

In the Corporate world, our job is to please others, so the very first thing I wanted is to let go of pleasing others. (Besides my family.) I even stop all my memberships with institutions that I was formerly a member of. Pleasing people is a pain in the neck for the bacon & cheese that I put on the table for my family. In fact, most of my kids don’t like cheese.  When you focus on pleasing others, you sacrifice yourself, and your job is not something you're doing for yourself.  It is the time to listen to my gut & intuition, just want to listen to it slowly.

As I mentioned, I just want to be lost to find myself, so the second thing is to do a self-reflection. Did I have any hobbies? Am I creative? What did I enjoy doing? Writing, teaching, or doing volunteer work of helping others? Did I like drawing, photography, or art?

The third thing I wanted to do is release my fears of losing a comfortable job with a stable income. If I can’t release my fear now, it might be too late. I might be am too old. I might miss my chance to be a Qualipreneur. I even wanted to tattoo a Qualipreneur logo on my left hand. I believe if I let go of my fear, it’s never too late to follow my dreams & my path.

The fourth thing I told my friend my bank is never full. I am a man with (F) Faith, (S) Strongly believe that Buddha works in mysterious ways, and gives me signs and gifts. (Y)Youniquely I am never cash-rich and hardly love-poor. I am surrounding myself with people who love me; I am not worried about how much money I can make doing what I Love to do, with or without whatever formal requirements that are needed to accomplish them.

The last thing I told my friend, I don't have to be perfect, and when I open up to change, it will shift my energy. This in itself will communicate with everyone that I am ready to be my true self, and allow the next Unexpected Quality Journey to begin. Stepping into my truth self will free me from any judgment.  I should feel (F) Fulfilled (S) Stronger (Y) Youthful.

The important thing to remember is to pause. Working is a lifelong journey till you end in the coffin. Work can wait.  Interestingly, if you reverse my initial FSY backward you too will able to find the other important thing of you – Pause & find (Y)Your(S)el(F) & your purpose.

Starting is hard. So is Restarting.

Today Sharing:

The day after I turned fourteen, I started work. Woke early to walk to work. My first full-time job was at a metalworking engineering backyard factory. I don’t remember how I got the job. It’s likely happened that I am bored of going to school since I was bombarded by information every day. As a Primary 6 dropout, and through observing people working in the backyard factory, I figured that I am a guy that is interested in a hands-on type of job. After using my contacts and a short interview, I got the job. The factory lead-man simply needed a young boy who was motivated to clock in and do repetitive, mind-numbing work for eight hours every day.

By the end of day one, I knew I wouldn’t care what my neighbour boys will be thinking of me, a useless boy doesn't want to study and breaks his mother heart. Those potty-mouthed comments fell deaf on my ears. Work was work, and I love to make money and my family needed the money too. By-the-way, I finally left the factory when I turned eighteen, as it is mandatory to complete the full-time National Service. That might be another story for another Friday Sharing of my army life. Every Singaporean have his own boy to man army story.

My dad’s greatest aspiration was for me to work in a big factory with huge overhead cranes above my head. A craftsman working in a huge manufacturing facility. He wanted his boy to make big things.

But I didn’t have the luxury of choosing what I wanted to do. After my National Services, I followed my dad’s dream. I joined a Japanese factory which designed and manufactured equipment for paint manufacturing companies. During my period in the Japanese company, we have a taboo subject not to discuss the Japanese war in Singapore. I was employed as a welder-cum-metal-fabricator and since it is a small factory, we are all multi-taskers. We have to fabricate metal sheet, assemble all the parts together and install the equipment in the paint manufacturer company. My work and commute took 12 hours a day, there and back, to a dirty job where I worked with my head, hands and heart—helping to weld, machine, and build custom equipment that will bring colour & joy to families who brought the final products to colour their HDB apartment beautifully.

I never had any idea of what I'm getting out of this, or the feeling that I am doing a meaningful work each day. What was worth more to me was the money at the end of the week, for more beers and cigarettes.  In fact, I am more a less an orphan, a homeless, wild, young man.  All the while, I never worried and wonder that I will need a degree to land me a steady, tie-wearing desk job. Or need to study the English language to be able to write my Friday Sharing with you.

I am quite the lucky one, picked by one of the Japanese Engineer to follow him, where I learned to read blueprints (Engineering Drawing) to understand how things are put together. He encouraged me to go for courses and during my time we had the VITB. Now, our generation is lucky to have the big & modern ITE. Those old machines from yesteryears, that I practiced during my time, in the old VITB, was shipped to Vietnam. I visited the Vietnam VITB during one of my business study trips. That is where I realized my journey started from this old machine, now shaping the Vietnam generation, and hopefully, one of them will be like me.

I completed my blueprint study in the VITB and moved on to finish my VITB level II. Coincidently, after finishing my VITB, the time for my Japanese Engineer to return back to Japan came. I also decided to leave and join FMC, an oil & gas equipment manufacturing corporation, an MNC from America.

I was lucky, the second time that I got a job, I got it without much of an interview and started the following day. I still remember I started on March 19, 1979, and my starting salary is just $450 a month.  When I stepped into the factory for an interview, I got a real shock seeing the huge manufacturing facility. I saw the big overhead crane above my head, something my dad used to think and dream about. With the big machine I was told to operate on, I was bit taken back and just accept whatever the salary I was offered. After all, $450 is good enough for my daily beers and cigarettes as I am single and worry-free wild young man. My other skills came into play when the plant manager later discovered that I can weld and assemble. And again, I became a multitasker as when needed, and believe me or not, my salary doubled within 6 months. I was bad-mouthed for being a boot licker, but again, I let those comments slide. Work was work to me. Ever heard the story of a frog jumped out of the well? I liken myself to that frog, I jumped out of the well.

Here, I would like to thank Buddha that I seriously got a chance to work with a huge overhead crane over my head, fulfilling my dad dreams of becoming a skilled machinist cum welding, metal fabricator, and many hands-on skills that I picked up along the way. Truly, a multiskilling craftsman, but without and any certifications, diplomas or degree of sorts.

As the years pass, I am intrinsically motivated to do work harder that I care about and enjoy. I realized the work that gives me a sense of purpose (Making More Money) while helping others to fulfill their potential (Loving Safety).

In my quest for Quality Work; Quality Life, I spend the majority of my time chasing the kind of growth I wanted to fulfil after achieving my dad dream. I pushed on to fulfill my personal dream… be a Qualipreneur. A self-thought quality and safety professional.

Most people reading this might be thinking that I am lucky and fortunate enough to be working for reasons and able to bring home enough money to put food on the table. And not forgetting got a chance to traveling, I would said half the world.

Yes, you can say that I am lucky, Luck, to me, is to have two very important elements: planning ahead and waiting for an opportunity to strike. Luck is always waiting for you if you have prepared enough and once the opportunity arrived at your doorstep, they just caught you.

I aim to expand my reach and transform myself. As mentioned earlier, I never thought that I will need a degree to land me a steady, tie-wearing desk job. Now, I am lucky a 3rd time, I've completed my degree and promoted to a steady, tie-wearing desk job. I was promoted to the Regional TQM & HSE Manager. But I hardly don a tie. Maybe because I still have the bit of gangster style inside me or the street-fighter mentality. Only during my business trips and occasionally, when I need the tie to look professional.

Some people only want to make money at the expense of doing what they like, and often ignore the things that motivate them to do the great work, Quality Certainty and Love Safety which will ironically enable them to expand their reach, attract more and feel fulfilled. When we prioritize Make Money (Capitalism) and Love Safety (Humanism) everything falls into place.

Asking businessmen to put purpose (Love Safety) before profits (Make More Money) doesn't make sense in today's business strategy.

That’s the reason when one of my friends indirectly copy my tagline to state “Love Safety & Make Money”  I told him that he is welcome to copy and share my tagline - 'Make Money & Love Safety,' but he can't tweak it the other way around because you can’t change reality. All businesses exist to make money period! Not to love you. But we can nudge businesses to Make Money (Capitalism) and Love Safety (Humanism) and everything falls into place.

2017 FSY Week 015- Restructing
Hello Friday Friends, 朋友, Kawan, Dost & PengYiu,

How can I tell a story that will capture what I want to convey?

Quality Certainty

Here are a few principles I live by in my own Quality Certainty practice. I loved them and I thought I should share.

If you can’t read well, you can’t do Quality Work well.

The most important thing you have to do to achieve Quality Work Certainty is be able to read the work processes well. Quality work is the best teacher, so just immerse yourself in it.

There is no Quality Work Certainty unless the Work processes are repeatedly done over, again and again, with truth and consistent work.

When I work with new people, I often tell them to expect the first day work to be full of shit with a few gems hidden in there somewhere. It takes time, patience, and a whole lot of repetitive work on the first day. It also takes the courage to take notes down on paper without initial judgment or concern. Just do it, and let yourself feel the process. Don’t let your judgment or your cognitive bias affect you in the first place. Trust and believe yourself, that you can continue to get better with time and practice.

Quality Certainty goals are not complex work processes and simple ideas, rather, simple work processes and complex ideas. If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough. Work procedures do not need to be complicated, confusing, or full of jargons. To me, Work procedures are processes for building understanding for yourself, and others. For myself, I often take notes, explore ideas, and re-work the work processes on a piece of paper just to tango with an idea until it makes sense in my mind. If I can’t explain it to people, then I’m not well-versed enough in the concept.

Quality Certainty is first a tool for internal understanding and communicating well externally. Often, much of my Quality Certainty stories are just about my thoughts, ideas, and explorations before I share with anyone else.

Your output is just as important as your input. Getting to a clear, simple point is not straightforward. Often, I have to work through a few days just to get a simple idea hammered into that “thing” above my head. It’s part of the process.

Have you heard or read about? : ‘The 1 Percent Rule’ or the ‘80/20 Pareto Principle’  And you may also have been bombarded by the “win-win” strategies.

I hardly ever believe there is a win-win situation; most of the time you either lose-lose, win-lose or lose-win.  I strongly believe in the Winner-Takes-It-All strategy.

Lately, I am looking at a few companies to renovate my new apartment and they have to pitch to me, their potential client, but only one of them will win my project. The renovation contractors only need to be 1 percent better than their competition to secure all of the reward. Or, perhaps you are applying for a new job every candidates submitted their resumes, but you are the only 1 percent better than the rest because you submit a eulogy rather than the same old, same old resume that caught the interviewer's eyes, and being just 1 percent better than other candidates earns you that job.

To be Quality Certain, small differences in performance can lead to very unequal distributions when repeated over time. The 1 Percent Rule and the 80/20 Pareto Principle applies here. The people and organizations that can do the right things right every time with truth and consistency are more likely to be the Winner-Takes-It-All rewards over time.

So, my question: What are your Quality work, Quality life dreams, and goals? Are you adapting and growing with your current work?

If you apply the 1 Percent Rule together with the 80/20 Pareto Principle you are much better in your respective fields and industries. The process of accumulative the 1 percent is the hidden strategy that drives the 80/20 Rule that drive Quality Work; Quality life.

Start today, by improving 1 percent every day, and if you are able to maintain and repeat this overtime, Quality life will prevail, probably at age 60. 60 are now the new normal middle age, it used to be 40.

A tattoo for Quality Work & Quality Life.

I would like to have a tattoo. Would really like to have one on my hand.  Maybe a word, a design or a symbol. I like the meaning that goes into the design of the tattoo. When it comes time to get the tattoo inked into the right spot, I don’t really mind the pain because that reminds me of the unexpected Quality Journey -- it is the part of life process.

Last year @60 year, I did bungee jumped for the first time. So what’s next @61? A Tattoo, I decided to choose a word as a reminder to me, “I believe it.”  It is a reminder that allows difficult circumstances to happen, but it can also walk me through those difficult unexpected life journey.  As I have journey down the path of Quality Work, Quality Life, some days when I see the tattoo I think of that difficult journey, but other times all I remember is the Quality Work that I have put in and Quality Life that it brought to me.

I wish that the pain that came with getting a tattoo was all it took to overcome the difficult that came with my experience in the unexpected Quality journey of life. It is a long journey with no magic pill to instantly make Quality Work; Quality Life Certainty. There are no special words to remove it from my memory. The experiences are there to stay forever just like my FSYQualipreneur tattoo. (coming soon)

With uncertainty happening around us, we tried to live with this uncertainty.  If you lost your job because of the chaotic and destructive environment, the events of that day might be forever a part of your life but they should not define you. If you walk out of the organization alive. You, indeed, are alive, like how you are still alive today, reading my Friday Sharing w/You Story.  Really alive!  I think so, You should enjoy life to the (F)Fullest, be (S)Strong, be wrong and be (Y)Youthful.   You should not let your (F) Fears, (S)Sadness  & (Y) Your anxieties hold you back.  You cannot live in the memories of what happened that day. Consider it a great joy, whenever you experience various hardships, knowing that it is a testing of your faith that will produce endurance. But endurance must be coupled with Quality Work, so that you mature and complete with Quality Life.  Luckily for me the tattoo will always be with me.

Thank for reading
