I used to teach "BBS". These 3 letters stand for (B)behavioral (B)Based (S)Safety, and last week during my usual coffee break discussion one of my Malaysian friends in Johor told me that in Bahasa Melayu BBS stand for (B)Boleh (B)Bodoh & (S)Sotong.  Wow, Wow, Wow... those 3 boring letters words suddenly become intriguing in another country, in another culture. As I sipped my coffee, my brain cells ignited and I told my friends that they were right in a sense.

In the workplace, if you work safely, you (B)Boleh (meaning Can) and once you work unsafely, you become (B)Bodoh (meaning Silly). When you make money and NOT love safety, that gets you injured and you become a (S)Sotong (meaning Humdrum) worker.

We too are Boleh but most of the time B+BS

One-Word Practice

Resolutions Don’t Work But One Word Practice Does:

This week, that word is:

‘Regret’

Today Sharing:

‘Regret’

How to practice this?

Practice by asking yourself:

Do you have regrets for the things you did not do, that are inconsolable?

How do you live with no regrets?

“A life lived is a life replete with choices.”

Many people love to live with the above, but you have to be careful because although some choices go well, most will go wrong, and those gone wrong spell regret & you BS – you (B) Blame and maybe become (S) Superstitious.

So until next week look across your life as a whole, and ask, what do you regret most? Which aspects of life,

Children,

Career,

Money,

Spirituality, & why?

On Children:

There should not be any regret if you take my below advice.

The first 10 years they love you.

The next 10 years they judge you.

And another 10 years they don’t want you.

On Career:

I only have this advice for you, have a ‘Fuck-it’, Fund. Spend one year of saving up your current salary, so that you can say ‘Fuck-it’ if you don’t like your boss. There is a saying you don’t leave the company, you leave because of your boss. So, Fuck-it.  If you don’t like the word ‘Fuck-it’, your choice as mentioned, “A life lived is a life replete with choices.”

On Money:

One simple idea on money: 10 years from now you will be more disappointed if you didn’t save $100,000 than if you didn't start saving a dollar a day now. A dollar saved is a dollar earned. Take Action now (F)Focus (S)Save now & (Y)You will not Regret

On Spirituality:

Please explore by yourself and you will not feel regret. I hardly want to expand the ‘ONE-WORD’ practice, because I prefer you to take action to practice. By reading you only gain knowledge. Without putting the knowledge you've learned into action and practice it, to me, is useless knowledge. If you want to take time for walking (like me, Wednesday is walking time) you have to make time. ‘It takes time to make time.’

I advocate "Make Money & Love Safety"

Not because I want to sell you a product,

Not because it's a tried and tested theory or program

Not because it's fancy 4 wording trend, tagline or slogan

I advocate it merely because we all can work together and make the workplace a Better & Safer environment to be in.

You have a choice:

The alternative is waiting for the management's safety goal of lap incidents, waiting for everything to align in a way that permits you to work safely.

Waiting to Make Money & Love Safety or make the workplace Better & Safer is hardly worth pursuing, right?

I think Not?

The choice is in your hands.

Today Sharing:

It’s Friday - Buckle up

Even a happy occasion like Chinese New Year, I got the same bombarded again by my siblings and friends for asking them to buckle up before I drive off. They give me the same old reason that none of their friends or taxi drivers asks them to buckle up. Interestingly, one lady told me, that I am not driving a sports car and I can’t speed at all.  Only I, the grumpy old man, kept insisting that they buckle up.

My question is - Why do we still have Boleh, Bodoh & Stubborn people ignoring this life-saving fixture which takes a few seconds to buckle up?

It's sad to read the news about toddlers falling out of the car, or getting into a car accident. In these cases, it is because they did not have a toddler car seat.

The story does not end with just a toddler's death. It is the aftermath that will come back to haunt you. The consequences of not buying a toddler car seat, not buckling up, and all of these safety precautions will leave a lasting scar in your life. How will you, as the parent, carry on with your life thereafter? Will the incident haunt you for life?

Did You Know -“What you allow is what you continue….”

These are so-called educated adults, yet they fail to abide by the buckle-up law. It's sickening to see that, and the children who follow suit. (“What you allow is what you continue….”) They hardly buckle up and jump around like a monkey in the back seat. I always ask what type of parents are these? It is the parent that allows their children to behave like monkeys is what they will continue…to be monkey.”

There are consequences of not buckling up your seat belt, but not in my car. If you don't like this 60 years grumpy old man insisting you buckle up, you have more than 3 alternatives. Maybe a BMW suit you -- (B)Bus (M)MRT or (W)Walk. Walking is my favorite.

Buckle up NOW, because there is almost no one time that is important. It is the most important time because it can save your life.

 

When coming to buckle-up, if you want to talk about nudging my mother-in-law is my Best Role Model. If an 84 years old lady can buckle-up, shame on you for giving me all the excuses.
