Adapt, Change & Grow

Mr. Foo Siang Yian, Daniel

I am a Qualipreneur, an Adult Educator &
Retired Regional TQM & HSE Manager at FMC Technologies
---------------------------

Adapt, Change & Grow:

Interestingly, I am a certified trainer in Malaysia but after so many years of facilitating, training and teaching, I am not yet a certified trainer or an Adult Educator in Singapore. Maybe I was from the old school of the ‘Train-The-Trainer’ era that is obsoleted.

With that in mind I enrolled to upgrade myself for the WSQ Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTAv5) and completed the course, (January12,2018) and now I am a certified Adult Educator (Trainer) in Singapore.

Now the old school & the new school merged in me and I am equipped to deliver training and conduct assessment as well as meet the training needs of people in a technological age.

With my 33 years (1979-2012) of operations experience in the oil & gas industries should be beneficial to your rapidly growing operations.

Having various capacities of Operations, Quality Improvement Process (QIP) & Health Safety & Environment (HSE) within the oil & gas organisation that lead me in achieving my Regional QIP (TQM) & HSE position. During my tenor, I have acquired real & soft skills in all phases of my work life journey.

Though having retired from operations, I am still keen on moving towards my passion in teaching and sharing my lifelong working experiences to our younger generations.

I would greatly appreciate having the opportunity to show you ways that I can assist in your operations achieving your goals of Making Money & Love Safety.

The underlining strategy is to achieve Quality Work; Quality Life for everyone in your organisations

I have known Daniel for over 20 years and had the pleasure to work with him for most of that time. He is one of the most talented HSE&QIP managers we ever had at FMC Technologies. Daniel is very innovative and his leadership contributed to the AP Region being the highest performing region for HSE within the company. I would highly recommend Daniel as a consultant for any management project.

I have been a colleague of Daniel during my tenure with FMC. It has been my pleasure to attend Daniel's Quality workshop. His workshop has been very engaging and full of new ideas. Daniel has been instrumental in instilling Safety and Quality culture during his tenure in the organisation. The Safety and Quality culture was at their top notch through-out all the operating region.

I have known Daniel for more than 10 years and we still keep in touch regularly despite not working together. Daniel was a generous manager, a fun trainer, a keen lifelong learner, a creative thinker, an inspiring leader and most importantly, he’s still one of my mentors. One of the few great person who makes a dent in my life.

Daniel was my boss and mentor before I left for another post. Now, he is still my mentor and friend. My learning experiences have never been the same after meeting him for the past/current workplaces. He is well versed in the active and engaging in facilitating learning. For example - 9 years ago as a facilitator, he has already taught us what the current ACTAv5 is teaching. If you know his past experiences and on how he got into the Regional HSE/TQM roles, you will be amazed! He walks the talk and has various field experiences. Lastly, as an avid Qualipreneur who still believes in his motto of "Make Money, Love Safety".

Daniel, I only write boring emails of my work and things that matter within my scope of work that I am hired for. I hardly write & share things on social media or whatapps.

Having worked under you for many years, I believe you understand that I am a man of few words. But, today I felt that it is paramount to share my wonderful thoughts because for me to have such feelings is somehow related to you!

Today (Thursday, October 04, 2018) marks my last day with my current company. The feeling I had is totally different compared to the last time I resigned from my previous company. Whilst driving home, I was wondering why I feel so different and of course, with eyes still focusing on the road.

Remembering what you said about when you resigned from a company, you need to leave an impression or a mark! As you taught us to Make A Dent (MAD) and make that place a little better than before.

When you resigned from your ex-company to retire from the Corporate World, you have left a legacy though we know you are not retiring, just want to be lost & find a better person after 33 years in the same organization.

We need to uphold that legacy whether it being good or bad because people will always remember that this was Daniel Foo's TQM & HSE Department. When we do things, people tend to always like comparing how Daniel does this, improve this or that the last time!

I am glad for the decision you made to bring someone back in your succession plan to manage the department when you decided to retire as well as not promoting me because it gave me a legit reason to resign and venturing into other company as a department head.

Today, when I left this current company, the feeling I had was different when I resigned from the previous company because I too, left behind my own legacy. I did Make A Dent (MAD) here! I have shop floor supervisors and other managers approaching me saying “Thank you for your work that make this place a little better than before", "Thank you for teaching me so many things which I don't know", "We hope that the next replacement manager can uphold your legacy and can do what you have done".

With all these feedbacks, I instinctively knew that I have Make A Dent (MAD) and left my legacy behind instilling a mindset of Make Money & Love Safety!
I am grateful to you for hiring me and kick start my career in making me a better person, besides my own Subject Matter Expect. I also learned from you in becoming a Quality Leader like you. You are truly a Quality leader for developing people who you hired. Those who you hired will agree with me too.
Also, I am grateful to you for having made that valuable decision (2012) which in turns enabled me to step out of my comfort zone to adventure to other green field thus leaving my own legacy as I explore the unexpected Quality journey of my life.

Regional Manager at XPO Logistics, Inc.
