We are in the 5th month of 2017
May-Day! May-Day! We got problems.
Is our society angrier now?
Are our common areas becoming more dirty lately?
Is Orchard Road becoming boring?
Is the pursuit of money becoming the root of all problems?
Are milk powder prices going up sky high?
Is intolerance built into our social fabric? - Young couples verbally abusing an elderly man
Are we becoming a Self-entitlement nation rather than a Smart Nation?
Is becoming Fast and Furious our new normal?
You can add any problems you face today to the above list...
My answer to the above questions are all "Yes". We are becoming an impatient nation, we want thing fast and on our terms. We just want to make money & more money (Capitalism) and forget to love Safety (Humanism, to be more spiritual). If we don't inject spirituality into our lives humanity will be heading to a dead end.
We have been pushing to become a smart nation, trying to make more & more money on our journey of life. Unfortunately we have a lack of spirituality participation, spirituality leadership, spirituality communication, spirituality culture evolution and we don't take time to pause, just to drink kopi with our buddies & have a simply conversation.
Yes, it is paramount that we have the adequate financial budget to keep going on our life journey, but money alone cannot ensure we are always motivated to participate and cooperate in spirituality.
Yes, Make Money & Love Safety is two important elements in a single goal of our journey of life.
Here is a twist, I would like to look at the above social problems as a workplace problem, which I am more familiar with, and share my alternative ideas. I believe you, me and everyone have to work to make money and everyone have to go to an office, a workplace, social network hub, or even SOHO, etc.
Recently, most of the schools start to have classrooms cleaning program to cultivate our younger generation toward a cleanliness society of future. That is a good place to start. But we might miss a big group of adult citizens who ae not brought up by our school system; they are brought in by other countries school system or not at all. All this anti-social behaviours might be ingrained from other place. I am not blaming any immigrant; rather our focus might be lopsided. The current problem is not created by our present school going children.
My alternative idea to address the current anti-social behavioral starts from the workplace.
Lately I observed that many small and medium enterprises hardly send their employees to a team building workshop or annual retreat to have team bonding activities.
As I mentioned, Make Money & Love Safety is two most important elements in a single goal of our journey of life. The other aspect towards our journey of life is Quality Work: Quality life.
Without putting Quality work in the beginning of our working life, we might not be able to make enough money to put on the table. Therefore, we might not be thinking of Loving safety, the spiritual aspect will be missing and humanity went into the drain. And toward the near end of our life's journey our quality Life will not prevail.
As we are going to live beyond 90 years old & further, Quality Work & Quality Life is the other aspect that we must inject into our journey of life.
The new middle normal is our next life journey starts @60.
So, let's look at a few workplace problems that you might be challenged daily. Your product deliveries are taking longer than expected. Customer’s complaints rise through the roof. You didn't sell as well as you hoped it would on your products. Retails businesses are going to be dead in Orchard road. Your team isn’t bonding at all.
I hope you can visualize a similarity between a workplace & social issues or/problems. Addressing a workplace problem might indirectly solve the anti-social problem.
Whenever, I teach this in my Quality Important Process a.k.a. The Unexpected Quality Journey workshop I always emphasized that the toolkits you learned & takeaway at the end of the day can be applied both in your professional and personal life to make Quality Certainty.
If you read enough of information from the main medium or social platform the solution to almost every problem whether they are social or workplace usually came from asking the same question.
We want to improve it for the better,
We want to improve productivity
We want to improve Innovation
We want to become a smart nation
We want to be first to market and be first.
We want to make more money?
How can we get all these things better and we want it now?
And we hardly mentioned "Quality Certainty” – maybe another story for another Friday sharing.
Most of the time, the "How to" questions are the wrong question to starts of, because often what we want the outcome to be is not better, better isn’t the real cause of the problem. The unique starting point is by asking; what’s the purpose of our intent, our visions, missions & values before we ended in the coffin?
We implement behavioural changes action by not fixing what have been broken, rather by getting a clear, purposefulness & understandable about exactly where our journey is headed. We have to be mindful that whatever journey we take on, Physical, mentality, monetarism or spirituality everyone ends at the same place, inside a coffin, and not by obsessing about what we think is in the best way.
We may be focusing too much on a technology, smart nation, big data, IA, or whatever -- and not enough on the approach to engaging Human beings spiritually in the workplaces, at school or at home. If we can put a hiatus the technology, work with policy makers, managers and executives to have them engage in the element of spirituality in human beings directly perhaps in a jungle setting not farther away, Forget about getting into a hotel or those so call town-hall meetings. I always have this fascination for learning in the jungle, nature retreat & gathering. If we can get everyone out to an open environment, get them excited, get them to tackle problems & issues that these human beings themselves can wrestle with resolve, then directly implement improvements that resolve those issues.
Getting people into open nature environment & conducting regular dialogue is better than getting ideas from your suggestion boxes that you would implement. What you really want is to encourage social interaction and improve on the spirituality level. And then, when that the social and spiritually elements happens, share them openly in the next retreat or gathering and recognize those acceptable behaviour and publicize those success widely, and often.
What I mean about Spirituality:
Spirituality means different things to different people. For some, it's about participating in organized religion: going to a church, temple, mosque, synagogue and so on. For others, it's more personal—some people get in touch with their spiritual side through their daily prayers, yoga, meditation, quiet reflection or journaling.
For me I prefer to go for a long lonely walks in the nature and do my walking meditation.
The next time if you want a better understanding of the situation or problem, first things first, is to map the work process and ask a better question: “What am I missing here rather than what or/how I want to improve?
Or maybe you act as an anthropologist, studying an alien culture to understand the potential from all points of view and consider multiple perspectives.
(F)Frustration (S)Sinking into our emotions, (Y)You (D) Distracted easily, but if you exhale completely & take a deep breath and hold it for 1 minutes. The circumstances pull out of our heads and into our hearts. The contemplative mind turns your attention inward while your rough connections pit your feelings against the intentions of others. Magnetic forms a creative connection with passionate requiring you to dig beneath the apparent differences and seek meaningful connections by first establishing common ground.
