Friday Sharing W/You 2017 May 19 (Week #20)

Hello Friday Friends, 朋友, Kawan, Dost & PengYiu,

Quick Quotable
Quotes are told in a few words that impact to our soul. Quotes are not meant to be read lightly. Quotes can change your life only when you choose to be deliberate when you read & think it deeply about them.

This week Quote is:
As you walk and eat and travel, be where you are. Otherwise you will miss most of your life.” -Buddha

Question for Reflection
How Can I let people know that I appreciate their work?

One-Word Practice
Resolutions Don’t Work But One Word Practice Does:
This week, that word is:
Regroup

Today Sharing:
Have your children ever ask you, “What did you do at work today?”

How will you answer this: in a meaningful way, or just summarize the activities you did? First, you open up your email in the in-box and you check your boss's emails if there is any. You read some junk emails, send a few emails and talk with some people. You spend the day trying to align and simplify work processes, investigating any accident reported, do a root-cause analysis, facilitating discussion in a staff meeting and developing the strategy for the department. Do these things sound interesting?

Whether to your children or anyone, it always very difficult to explain and describe how you spent your day at work meaningfully, and it is even worse if you are like me to explain to my own children about Make Money & Love Safety. It’s hardly a great topic or story to start off.

I will try my best to explain it in a meaningful way.

Make Money & Love Safety (MMLS) is a hybrid of Science, Art & Real skills of (F) Focus (S) Support, 👍 Yearning & (D) Discipline. It’s the functionality of stabilizing the capitalism and Humanism of the business in the organization as a whole. And it includes the field of Learning & Organizational Development and Human Resources Development.

The hybrid of Make Money & Love Safety always overlaps in these areas: People, Process & Environment (PPE)

To able to Make Money & Love Safety in a sustainable journey these 3 areas are essential and very powerful.

The People.
Everything we do daily depends heavily on people connecting with people. Connecting all levels of the people in the organization from the C-suite to the shop floor or frontline. Their behaviours are to Listen, Question, & Repeat (LQR) the understanding and sharing.

The Process.
All work is a process and all processes have to be mapped, improved, simplified, tested & validated.

The Environment.
A common & reliable environment with a framework & structure in place to facilitate Make Money & Love Safety.

If you are embarking on a change programs to Make Money & Love Safety or Quality Certainty or even becoming a “SMARTER” organization, concentrating on one or two of the three areas mentioned above, you will fail to capitalize the power of the model of 3.

If you focus on people and process and neglect the environment than you risk the culture part that aligns the values together.  People and Environment can be powerful partners but if your processes are complicated you risk reworking your final products and miss delivery schedules. If you start with the Process & Environment without the people aspect in your change program you will generate great resistance from the people who will be working on the change.

Is Make Money & Love Safety the best tagline?

I understand it is an oxymoron to decide what I am working on and advocating a major change to our current old ‘Safety First’ mindset.

I once heard that Making Money likened to profiteering and getting workers to produce more with less, pushing for productivity regardless of humanity. Telling management to love safety is a sexy thing.  In all business dealings, they are looking at the bottom-line numbers. Accidents happen in other company’s backyard, not theirs. Loving safety happens only when accident eats into their bottom-line. Otherwise, No-Pain No-Action, No-Prevention is the golden standard of a business as usual environment.

In order to create and environment for Make Money & Love Safety to rapidly flourishes you need: The People in the right action. The Process in the right means with a common model and tools. The Environment with the right conditions. A common reliable framework and structure.

If deliver more and do it with fewer resources is your mandate? And If productivity challenge is what you’re facing today?  Then, a key way is to align Your People, Process, and Environment creating a culture to Make Money & Love Safety. It is a practical, pragmatic process to help you become unconsciously competent. When the real skills and techniques are embedded in the core business processes. When this happen there is no need of safety officers dedicated to police the safety rules & regulations in the organization, or even at the country level.
